Small vase, Hakeme Strokes

Small vase in hakeme technique. Unglazed outside, glazed inside.

Hakeme is a Japanese technique where you paint with a contrasting engobe (liquid clay) and let the brushstrokes show. Here I have worked with darker engobes on light clay. The dark one is a brownish-black stoneware clay, and the lighter one is an earthenware clay that has melted out and is partially shiny.

I can never have too many bud vases. They are perfect for that one flower I found in the garden, the first snowdrops of spring or a single blade of grass. Grouping several small vases together is also great! Mix and match in different colors and shapes, or choose a common theme.
